South Larnaca can be found towards the south of the island. It is the home of the main international airport of Cyprus, based a few kilometres outside the city. Larnaca also houses the island's second commercial port and boasts a large marina. The District is one of the island’s major tourist destinations (around 3 million tourists visit the island each year), whilst Larnaca Town (20 minute drive) is renowned for its picturesque sea-front, complete with palm trees. During the major festivals, much of the activity is concentrated in and around the city promenade. One of the most celebrated festivals is that of Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood that is celebrated in early summer.

Larnaca is the oldest living city of Cyprus, originally known as Kition or Kittium and is believed to have been founded by Noah's great-grandson Kittim. Unlike the other ancient cities of Cyprus, Larnaca still exists on the original site which dates back over 6000 years. Larnaca has a rich cultural heritage that can be traced back to the arrival of the Mycenaean Greeks in the 13th century BC when it was a rich seaport and a major centre of the copper trade. Recent excavations have unearthed remains from that period including the Cyclopean walls and a complex of Mycenaean temples. The Byzantine period also left its mark on the landscape through the construction of many interesting monuments including the basilica of Saint Lazarus, dated from the 9th Century AD, the marble bust of Zeno, the underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni, which is said to have magical healing properties and possibly dates back to the Phoenician times.

Cultural diversity can be found in the wide variety of restaurants, tavernas, cafeterias and bars that have evolved over time. There is something for everyone, ranging from 'traditional Irish pubs' to international chains such as McDonalds to local Cypriot dining such as the town’s specialty food, 'meze'.

All these aspects (potential tourism) when linked into the accessibility of Larnaca, the year round climate, wide ranging activities, low taxation, growing economy and close proximity and development of major infrastructure will only serve to improve island wide communication making Cyprus much more than an investment opportunity, but more of a veritable time-bomb waiting to explode in favour of the astute investor.
